In response to the client’s need to accommodate a family member with health challenges, this project focused on creating a fully accessible ground floor bedroom with an ensuite. The design prioritised comfort, dignity, and ease of use, meeting accessibility standards throughout. By thoughtfully converting the existing garage and a section of the utility room, we were able to provide a practical yet homely space that supports both mobility and wellbeing.
In close collaboration with the client, we reimagined the ground floor layout to better reflect the rhythms of modern family life. The design focused on creating a light-filled, open-plan kitchen-diner with a relaxed lounge area—achieved by seamlessly incorporating the existing garage into the new floor plan. During the strip-out phase, original stone flags were uncovered, revealing a previously hidden basement. Embracing this unexpected opportunity, we worked with specialists to treat the space for damp, fully tank it, and integrate it as a practical and characterful lower floor. The result is a warm, functional, and thoughtfully designed home that balances everyday comfort with architectural interest.
High-level basic sketches are an excellent tool for exploring floor plan ideas and assessing how space can be utilized efficiently. The brief for this project was to improve the ground floor layout by creating an open-plan living area that flows seamlessly into a formal lounge. In addition, a dedicated downstairs suite was designed to provide comfortable accommodation for visiting relatives. Throughout the design, careful attention was given to maintaining the integrity of the existing structural walls, ensuring the space was reconfigured without compromising the stability or character of the original building.
